Kumara treats

Kumara Treats

  1. What is kumara? Kumara is like a potato you can make chips and fries. Kumara also has different color.
  2. Where was kumara from originally? It originally came from Central America.
  3. Why do you think seagulls were used to control caterpillars? So that the caterpillars don't eat the crops
  4. Were Maori the only people to bring in kumara? How do you know? No because of the pakhea.
  5. Are all kumara the same? How do you know? No because they have different colors and different size. Some of them taste different.
  6. Research a recipe using kumara and add to it bel500g chicken thigh fillets, halved
  7. 500g red kumara, peeled and diced into large pieces
  8. 1 lemon, sliced
  9. 1 red onion, cut into wedges
  10. 2 red capsicum, cut into wedges
  11. 2 tbsp fresh chopped rosemary, plus 1 tbsp to garnish (optional)
  12. 2 tbsp olive oil
  13. 1 tsp each salt and cracked pepper
  14. 250g cherry tomatoes
  15. 1/2 cup pitted black olives
  16. 1. Preheat oven to 200°C fan bake.
  17. 2. Place chicken, kumara, lemon, onion, capsicum and rosemary into a 20 x 30cm baking dish and drizzle with 2 tbsp olive oil.
  18. 3. Add the salt and cracked pepper and toss so all ingredients are coated in oil.
  19. 4. Bake for 25 minutes, then scatter with tomatoes and olives. Return to the oven for another 10 minutes until chicken and kumara are cooked through. Garnish with extra chopped rosemary, if desired.
  20. Cook’s tip: Line the base of the dish with baking paper for easy clean-up.

My reading activity. By Cyprus.

Life on a desert road

1) What is a desert usually look and feel like?
A desert is usually hot,dry and sandy.

2) Where does the desert road run through?
Road runs through a desert that is cold and windy and covered in ice or snow in winter.
3) What happened to the trees?
The trees got destroyed by NZ biggest volcanic eruptions
4) What is around desert road today?
Many animals live in scrub.
5) What animals live near the road?
The Scrub

6) What happens if your car breaks down on desert road?
If you break down wait for a passing car or you might even need to send for the tow truck.

7) What do Cliff and Mana do?
Cliff Taylor check the huge pylons that carry electricity to other parts of North Island. People like Mana Wilson have to work hard to clear it out.



8) What could be seen as a strange sight on the desert road?
An army tank would be a strange sight on most roads.
9) What does the army camp allow every year?
Every year, the army lets a car club use their land to race off-road cars.

10) Other than the army camp what else can be found along desert road?
Apart from the land the army owns, the area beside the road is a National Park.

11) What do the Tutauha family do to help?
The Tutauha family help clean it up, by collecting the cans for recycling.

12) Why do tourists stop along this road? What do they see?

Tourists from all over the world stop on desert roads to look at our beautiful volcanic mountains.

1. How did Trent get himself into trouble? Jason was  telling Trent his latest jokes .




2. Describe the school bags in the corridor The schoolbags are lined up and Huia and Tren has plastic bags and the other don’t have plastic bags




3. Why did Trent and Huia have plastic bags instead of school bags?Because There mom couldn't afford it and there mom didn’t have a job.




4. What is Dream Planet and what did Jason buy with his pocket money?Dream Planet it a theme place like Rainbows End and he bought a silver cap thats why he bought with his pocket money.




5. Describe the food at Dream Planet. Hot dogs and doughnuts, packets of chips, popcorn, and ice cream.




6. How was Trent feeling when the food was described to him and why?He might want to have the food but he lied to his mom that he ate it.




7. What was Jason having for lunch?Filled to the brim. An egg sandwich with extra-thick bread sits on top.




8. Where was Trent’s morning tea and why couldn’t he tell his Mother?Trent said he already ate it and he didn’t told his mom because his mum didn’t have a job so he will tell his mom but when she gets a job.

9. What does Trent see?Food paketes are scattered around in the playground.




10. What did Trent pretend to do?He pretend to put the muesli bar in the bin.




11. Why was Trent embarassed?I think because he wouldn’t tell Miss Anderson that he pretended to put the muesli bar in the bin.




12. What happened to the Muesli Bar?Trent dropped it and it fell on the dirt.




13. Why was Trent sent to the principal’s office?Because Trent wanted to be in the maths competition.




14. How was Jason kind?Jason put his egg sandwich in Trents plastic bag.




15. What other things could happen to Trent?He could stav and got in trouble more.

Finding China

1. What does everyone call Natalie Grace Ling-Yun?
Yani everybody call her Yani.










2. What was the amazing thing Natalie Grace Ling-Yun did?
The amazing thing that Yani done was that without her parents Yani travelled by her self.










3.  Where is Natalie Grace Ling-Yun’s dad from?
Yani’s dad is from China.











4. Who suggested that Grace should go to China?

I think Grace Ling-Yun suggest her self to go to China










5. What was the name of the school in China and what does Bilingual mean?
The name of the school is could Ping-He and Bilingual means two languages are used.










6. Describe the school:
Its was a new school with modern buildings and huge grounds and around two thousand pupils.










7. Who is Sophie and how did she help grace?
Sophie knew a bit of english and she taught Grace how to introduce herself in Chinese









8. What was their mornings like?
For breakfast by 6.30 a.m classes started at 7.00, finishing at 5.00.










9. What subjects did they do?
They do english, Science, maths, PE, art, calligraphy, music and history.




10. What are the symbols on page 13?
The symbols are characters.









11. Did Grace like the food? What was it?
No she didn't like the food and it was Steamed bun with Pork and Vegetables.  









12. What was a downside and upside of being tall?
Everybody stared at yani which made things worse.









13. What happened when she got over being homesick?

She started enjoying herself.
